Global mobile satellite systems-The ICO system

This is a medium earth orbit mobile satellite system. This provides services to handheld phones. Technology utilized here is TDMA technology. This system offer digital voice, data, facsimile, and short targeted messaging services to subscribers. Here we use a constellation of 10 MEO satellites in intermediate circular orbit at an altitude of 10355 km above the earth’s surface. The average weight of each satellite is around 2000 kg and life span around 12 years. They are arranged in two planes with 5 satellites each. ICO satellites will interact with terrestrial networks via 12 interconnected SANs located at various parts of the world. Each SAN consists of earth stations with multiple antennas and peripherals.
