Global mobile satellite systems-The global star system

Here a constellation of 48 LEO satellites is employed. Here intersatellite links are not opted. We use a large number of interconnected earth stations (gateways). This helps us to achieve efficient call routing and fine delivery over the terrestrial network. This provides telephony and messaging services to subscribers in remote locations. 48 LEO satellites are designed in such a way that the orbit is at an altitude of 1414 km above earth’s surface in 8 orbital planes inclined at 52 degrees. Each plane carries 6 satellites. Weight of each satellite is around 450 kg and life span is around 8 years. These satellites provide only transponder functions with lesser operational complications and high reliability.
