Global mobile satellite systems-The iridium system

Existing terrestrial cellular system can be modified by extending more facilities such that we can tender services to remote areas. Such a concept is implemented in Iridium system where the system provides large number of channels and better quality service via shorter transmission delays. This system safeguards against any geostationary satellite service breakage. A 48-beam antenna is employed in an Iridium satellite. Individual switching of beams possible here with an operating diameter atleast 600 km. The Iridium system supports links of three types. One is downlinks from the space vehicle to the gateway. Second one is downlinks between the space vehicle and the Iridium subscriber unit. Third one is two-way intersatellite links between the space vehicles.
