In Greek, ‘stereos’ means solid and ‘phone’ means sound. Thus stereophony stands for solid sound. The three dimensional reproduction is called stereo. There is minute difference of phase and intensity in the sounds reaching the two ears. This difference is interpreted by brain in such a way as to to enable the listener judge the directions from which sounds are coming. Thus we can conclude that the human system of hearing is stereophonic. In stereophony, the independent amplifiers have their own set of microphones for input and own set of loudspeakers for output. In stereo amplifiers, the actual sources of sound are virtually transferred to the respective loudspeakers.
